Today, October 17, 2025, the Somali Embassy in Rome hosted a meeting with the Chairperson of the Somaliyey Toosa ODV organization, Ms. Maryan Ruun Hassan, from the city of Forlì in the Emilia Romagna region.
During the meeting, Ms. Maryan Ruun shared with the embassy several problems faced by Somali citizens living in Italy, which she reported in depth, such as: She added that there are general problems and complaints that we receive from Somali citizens who come from remote regions of Italy, complaining that sometimes the time runs out, and they are forced to find a hotel or a place to sleep that night, who travel to the embassy in Rome to obtain official services such as: birth certificates, marriage, divorce, etc. Afterwards, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Eng. Ibrahim Omar Shegow, and the embassy’s advisors Khalid Macow and Ahmed Hassan, who were present at the meeting, thanked Ms. Maryan Ruun Hassan for her honorable presentation of the problems in some regions of Italy. The embassy pledged to stand by every Somali citizen wherever he is, to facilitate the issues of documents and other important services, such as the “Go Home” programs and similar ones.
The meeting ended with this.
- A Somali boy who was seriously injured at his workplace, who has been in hospital for more than two weeks, fortunately his brothers who live in one of these European countries, came to visit him, Ms. Maryan said that she is closely monitoring his situation and is ready to support him.
- Many young people who have legal status and work, are still facing challenges in renting houses, being denied rent on the grounds that they are foreigners. Ms. Maryan said that she is following up on this issue in collaboration with the district administrations where these young people live, and hopes that a solution will be found.
- Young people with mental illnesses who are in hospitals, whose conditions she is closely monitoring.
- Young people in prisons and those who are frustrated with their continued stay in Italy, for reasons that have taken hold of them and are asking us to send them back to their country of Somalia.
- Citizens waiting for passports they have applied for at the embassy, who are complaining about the long waiting times.
